Oil and gas stocks kept pace with chip stocks over the past year
The AI boom gets the headlines, and chip stocks earned them, up 57.9% over the past year. Energy stocks did slightly better, up 58.1%, while the S&P 500 rose 14.7%. The newest industry in the market and one of the oldest paid almost exactly the same.

Each line is one instrument's price, reset to 100 on the first day so they all start from the same place. A line at 120 is up 20% since then; below 100 is a loss. The gaps between the lines are the story: who is leading, and by how much.
When one trade dominates the conversation, it is easy to miss that another, very different one, paid the same. It is a reminder to check the scoreboard before assuming there is only one game.
The common view: the AI buildout has been the market's one big winner.
The Signal deskOver the past year energy stocks rose 58.1% and chip stocks 57.9%. The S&P 500 rose 14.7%.
The winners were broader than the headlines. Both trades are bets on something in short supply, computing power and energy, and the quieter one kept up without the attention.
