A big company falling 10% in a day used to be rare. This year: 25 times, a record

Among the 88 companies in today's S&P 100 that have traded since 2010, a one-day fall of 10% or more on a day the market held up happened about 9 times a year from 2010 to 2023. It happened 22 times in 2024, 21 times in 2025 and 25 times so far in 2026. The biggest this year: IBM -25.2%, Intuit -20.0%, UnitedHealth -19.6%, Accenture -18.0%. These were not crash days: each was one company repricing on one quarter or one forecast.

What you are looking at

Each bar is one year: how many times a company in today's S&P 100 lost 10% or more of its value in a single day, counting only the companies that have traded since 2010 so the same group is compared every year. Days when the whole market fell 2% or more are left out, so crashes like 2020 do not count; what is left is company-specific: a bad quarter, a guidance cut, a lawsuit. The dashed line is the average of the calmer years; the gold bar is this year so far. A big company dropping 10% in a day used to be rare.

Why it matters

If giants now fall like small companies on one report, how much risk a 'safe' portfolio carries has changed.

What they are saying

Bill Ackman, this month: "Now every quarter there's some relatively large company where the stock price moves enormously." The data agrees, and the jump is recent.

What the data shows

Company-specific one-day falls of 10% or more per year: 2010 12; 2011 10; 2012 13; 2013 12; 2014 8; 2015 8; 2016 9; 2017 6; 2018 9; 2019 11; 2020 3; 2021 4; 2022 8; 2023 9; 2024 22; 2025 21; 2026 25 (through Oct 27, 2026). The S&P 500 fell less than 2% on each of those days.

Our read

A large-company portfolio carries more single-day risk than it used to. That cuts both ways: deeper air pockets for patient buyers, and protective orders that fire on a bad morning rather than a broken business.
